How to spot a genuine Zippo: base and date code
Want to know whether your Zippo is genuine? Start with the base, then remove the insert from the case. Both should carry the Zippo trademark. The date code tells you when the lighter was made: letters A to L indicate the month and the two digits indicate the year.
Start with the base
Turn the lighter over and inspect the bottom of the case. A genuine Zippo has a Zippo stamp there. Zippo itself identifies this as a feature of its genuine pocket lighters. If the Zippo name is missing from the base, that is a clear warning sign.
Check the insert too
Carefully pull the inner unit, also called the insert, out of the case. A genuine Zippo also carries the Zippo trademark here. Sometimes a fake case looks convincing while the insert has no branding. That is why you should check both parts.
How to read the date code
Zippo has marked its lighters with a date code since the 1950s. Founder George G. Blaisdell introduced the code for quality control. As an owner, you can use it to find out the age of your lighter.
The code consists of a letter and two digits:
| Letter | Month |
|---|---|
| A | January |
| B | February |
| C | March |
| D | April |
| E | May |
| F | June |
| G | July |
| H | August |
| I | September |
| J | October |
| K | November |
| L | December |
The digits indicate the year. For example, 14 means 2014. If you see H 19, the Zippo was made in August 2019.
An older example, such as an inherited or found Zippo, may use a different code. In that case, compare it with the date code page on zippo.nl.
Useful clues, but not conclusive proof
You will often hear that you can recognise a genuine Zippo by its clear click. Its proportions and hinge are also mentioned: a fake may be slightly taller or narrower, or have a different, looser hinge. Treat these only as clues. None of these points proves on its own that a Zippo is genuine or fake.
Do you have one that you know is genuine? Place the two lighters side by side. Differences are easier to spot this way than by relying on a general impression.
Still not sure?
If you think you have bought a fake Zippo, contact Zippo through zippo.nl. The brand asks customers to report possible counterfeits there. You can also find the current warranty terms on the support page at zippo.nl.

Frequently asked questions
What does the letter on my Zippo mean?
The letter indicates the month of manufacture. A stands for January and L for December.
How can I find out how old my Zippo is?
Read the date code: a letter for the month and two digits for the year. H 19 means August 2019, for example.
Does the date code also determine the value?
No. It tells you the age of the lighter, not what it is worth.
What can I do if my Zippo looks fake?
Contact Zippo through zippo.nl. Zippo asks customers to report counterfeits there.
